Take A Deeper Look
The SonicWALL UTM (Unified Threat Management) appliances use reassembly-free deep packet inspection architecture that can examine every packet of data, before it enters or leaves your network. Unlike stateful inspection, SonicWALL solutions can inspect 100% of network traffic and when deployed with SonicWALL’s multi-threat protection, viruses, Trojans, spyware, phishing attacks, and other emerging threats are stopped before they enter your network.
As web based applications get more sophisticated, every gateway security appliance now needs to inspect the actual traffic payload (Deep Packet Inspection or DPI) and not just the header portion of the packet - also know as shallow packet inspection.
This becomes apparent when you look at applications like Peer-to-Peer (P2P) where the client can configure which port it uses to access the internet, which can be as easy as telling it to use the standard web browsing port of HTTP/80 - which nearly all standard firewalls will allow out unrestricted. Also, with mulitmedia applications like BBC iPlayer, which also uses the same connection as standard web browsing, these can be viewed by endusers without consent.
With the SonicWALL TZ and NSA series you can use the Deep Packet Inspection engine to control the web content you want, saving on bandwidth and increasing productivity. You can also, with the NSA range, control the amount of bandwdth these applications can use which is useful if you want to limit usage rather than block completely.
